MP3 → FLAC

Learn about the formats: What is MP3? What is FLAC?

Convert your compressed MP3 audio files into the lossless FLAC format with our online tool. This is ideal for users who need to integrate older MP3 recordings into high-fidelity audio workflows.

MP3 is a lossy media container that achieves small file sizes by discarding audio data deemed less audible to the human ear. In contrast, FLAC is a lossless media container that preserves the original audio stream perfectly. When converting from MP3 to FLAC, the file acts as a wrapper for the existing compressed data, resulting in a larger file size without adding any missing information back into the audio stream.

Converting MP3 to FLAC does not improve audio quality. Since the original MP3 data was already lossy, the FLAC file will simply contain that same lossy audio in a larger, lossless-compatible container.

Frequently asked questions

No. Because MP3 is a lossy format, the data lost during initial compression cannot be restored. FLAC preserves the MP3 quality, but it cannot recreate the missing frequencies.
FLAC uses a lossless compression algorithm that results in larger files compared to the highly compressed, lossy nature of MP3.
