VHDX is the modern Hyper-V disk format supporting up to 64TB and advanced features like power-failure resilience, whereas the older VHD format is limited to 2048GB and lacks these newer internal structures. When converting VHDX to VHD, the underlying virtual block storage is restructured to match the older format specifications, allowing compatibility with legacy systems that do not recognize VHDX headers.
