XLSX → Markdown

Learn about the formats: What is XLSX? What is MD?

Convert your Excel spreadsheets into clean, readable Markdown tables. This is ideal for quickly integrating tabular data into documentation or plain-text files.

XLSX is a complex spreadsheet format designed for data analysis, calculations, and rich formatting, supporting multiple sheets, formulas, and charts. Markdown (MD), on the other hand, is a lightweight markup language used for creating formatted plain text, primarily for documentation. When converting XLSX to MD, the process extracts the raw tabular data from the active worksheet and renders it as a simple Markdown table, discarding all advanced features like formulas, charts, macros, and elaborate cell styling.

Expect significant loss of formatting, formulas, and non-tabular elements like charts or images. The conversion focuses solely on preserving the raw cell data and its tabular structure within a single worksheet.

Frequently asked questions

No, formulas are not preserved. Only the calculated values displayed in the cells at the time of conversion will be transferred as plain text.
Charts, images, and other embedded objects are not supported in Markdown and will be completely lost during the conversion.
Typically, the conversion process only handles one active sheet from your XLSX file. If you have multiple sheets, you'll need to convert them individually or consolidate your data first.
Most advanced cell formatting like background colors, merged cells, or specific fonts are lost. Basic text formatting like bold or italics might be preserved if the converter supports it, but usually, it's simplified to plain text.
