HEIC Image
HEIC is an image format primarily used by Apple devices, offering superior compression and advanced features compared to JPEG. It stores high-quality photos in smaller file sizes.
What is HEIC Image?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image File) is a modern image container format based on the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) standard. Developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), it was widely adopted by Apple in 2017 with iOS 11 for storing photos on iPhones and iPads. HEIC files use HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) compression, allowing them to store images with significantly higher quality and transparency support at about half the file size of a comparable JPEG. It can also contain image sequences, depth maps, and live photos.
Advantages
- Significantly smaller file sizes than JPEG.
- Retains higher image quality after compression.
- Supports advanced features like Live Photos and image sequences.
- Includes transparency (alpha channel) and depth map support.
Limitations
- Limited native compatibility outside Apple ecosystems (Windows, older Android).
- Requires conversion for broader sharing and editing.
- Some older software might not support it.
How to open HEIC Image files
Common use cases
- Storing high-quality photos on Apple iPhones and iPads.
- Capturing Live Photos with motion and sound.
- Saving burst mode sequences efficiently.
- Reducing storage space for large photo libraries.
