What is SIGMA X3F Camera RAW?
The X3F file format contains raw, unprocessed sensor data captured by Sigma cameras using the Foveon X3 technology. Unlike traditional Bayer-sensor cameras that use an interpolation grid, Foveon sensors capture red, green, and blue light at every single pixel location across three separate layers. This format is widely used by professional photographers utilizing Sigma SD and DP series cameras to retain maximum detail, dynamic range, and color accuracy for subsequent editing.
Advantages
- Captures full color at every pixel location without demosaicing interpolation
- Contains uncompressed or lossless compressed raw sensor data for maximum image quality
- Provides wide dynamic range for shadow and highlight recovery
- Preserves original white balance and exposure settings for non-destructive editing
Limitations
- Proprietary format with limited native support outside Sigma's official software ecosystem
- Large file sizes require significant storage space
- Demands specialized processing software for optimal color rendering
- Currently not supported for direct conversion on the ConvertX platform
