Which format do I need?

Decimal degrees (40.1776, 44.5126) are what Google Maps, GPS apps and most spreadsheets and APIs expect. Latitude comes first; south and west are negative.

Degrees, minutes and seconds (40°10′39″N) is the traditional notation of paper maps, surveying documents and aviation. One minute is 1/60 of a degree, one second 1/60 of a minute.

Degrees and decimal minutes (40°10.657′N) is what most handheld GPS units and marine chartplotters show by default.

UTM divides the world into 60 zones six degrees wide and gives a position in metres east and north inside its zone. Engineers, surveyors and GIS software use it because distances can be measured directly in metres.

Frequently asked questions

WGS 84 — the datum used by GPS, Google Maps and OpenStreetMap. Coordinates from an old national datum (Pulkovo 1942, for example) can differ by tens to hundreds of metres; convert them with a GIS program first.
It uses the Krüger series on the WGS 84 ellipsoid and agrees with PROJ, the library behind most GIS software, to a fraction of a millimetre inside a zone.
UTM is only defined between 80° south and 84° north. Polar regions use a different system (UPS), which this tool does not produce.
