Both JPG and BMP are raster image formats, but they store visual data in fundamentally different ways. JPG uses lossy compression to keep file sizes small by discarding some color information. BMP, or Bitmap, stores pixel data without compression or with minimal uncompressed structures. When you convert a JPG to a BMP, the translator maps every existing pixel into the uncompressed bitmap grid. Because BMP does not compress data the same way, the resulting file will almost always become significantly larger than the original JPG.

Converting a lossy JPG into a lossless BMP format will not restore any quality or details that were already lost during the original JPG compression. Once visual data is discarded by a JPG, it cannot be brought back by changing the file extension.
