Both GIF and WEBP are raster image formats, but WEBP utilizes advanced predictive coding algorithms compared to GIF's older LZW compression. Because you are converting from a lossless format (GIF) to a format with lossy compression capabilities, a portion of the original data will be discarded during the process. This fundamental shift allows the resulting WEBP file to usually become much smaller while maintaining visual fidelity.
Since WEBP supports lossy compression, converting a GIF will discard minor color data, but this drop is rarely noticeable to the human eye while yielding a drastically reduced file weight.
