Both WEBP and GIF are raster image formats, but they handle compression and color data quite differently. WEBP uses advanced predictive coding which often results in smaller file sizes with lossy or lossless compression. When you convert a WEBP file—especially one compressed with lossy algorithms—to GIF, you are moving from a modern format to an older one restricted to a maximum of 256 colors per frame. Because GIF relies on LZW compression and a limited palette, previously lost data from a lossy WEBP cannot be recovered, and the resulting file usually becomes significantly larger.

Since WEBP can use lossy compression, any detail already discarded during the original WEBP creation is gone forever and cannot be restored in the GIF. Furthermore, converting to GIF introduces additional color quantization down to 256 colors, which may cause banding.
